Composite Fillings

Composite Fillings

We do not use any mercury or metal fillings of any kind in our office. Our doctors place composite fillings with a tooth colored, quartz-like material. Composite fillings are more than just attractive, they contain no toxic mercury. In addition, they are stronger because they bond directly to the surface of the tooth.

Composite fillings

Many patients today are seeking biocompatible, strong, and aesthetically pleasing options for repairing teeth, which is why our doctor team chooses composite fillings. Composite fillings not only provide a natural, tooth-colored appearance but also offer long-term benefits for the health and stability of your teeth. Unlike mercury fillings, composite materials bond directly to the tooth structure, strengthening it and reducing the risk of future cracks or fractures.

Our doctors often replace old silver fillings with composite for patients who are concerned about biocompatibility and the long-term stability of their teeth. During the procedure, the existing silver filling and any decay are carefully removed, ensuring the tooth is clean and healthy. The composite material is then layered into the tooth and cured with highly intense visible light, bonding securely to the tooth structure. The result is a restoration that not only looks natural but also supports the integrity of the tooth for years to come. The final restoration is virtually invisible, leaving your smile both beautiful and healthy.

Reasons for having a composite filling:

  • Decay on a portion of any tooth
  • Desire to maintain a white, beautiful smile
  • To replace old-fashioned mercury (silver) fillings
  • To restore a chipped tooth
  • To cover exposed root surfaces (often from gum recession)

Considerations for removing mercury (silver) fillings

Mercury or “silver” fillings have been used for over 150 years and were once considered a durable option for tooth repair. These amalgam fillings are a blend of mercury, silver, and other metals, but despite their name, they consist of approximately 50% mercury—a known neurotoxin. In addition to concerns about mercury’s impact on overall health, these fillings can expand and contract over time, potentially causing teeth to crack or fracture. They also don’t bond to the tooth structure, which can lead to further decay around the filling. Additionally, mercury fillings can cause teeth to discolor, giving them a dark, unsightly appearance.

At our office, we’ve always been committed to providing safe, modern, and aesthetically pleasing dental solutions. That’s why we are proudly mercury-free, offering composite fillings and other alternatives that not only look natural but also strengthen and protect your teeth in the long term.

Advantages of composite over silver (or mercury) fillings:

  • Conservative Care: Composite fillings are bonded directly to the tooth, allowing us to restore structural integrity without the need for extensive drilling. This approach preserves more of your natural tooth structure compared to traditional silver fillings, which require more invasive modification.
  • No Metal, Less Sensitivity: Composite is made from a blend of organic resin and inorganic fillers like glass or quartz. Unlike silver fillings, it doesn’t conduct heat or cold, resulting in less post-treatment sensitivity for patients.
  • Strengthens Teeth: Bonded composite fillings reinforce and strengthen teeth, while silver fillings can weaken the tooth over time and increase the risk of fractures, especially when they begin to leak and allow decay to form underneath.
  • Natural Appearance: Composite fillings are color-matched to blend seamlessly with your natural enamel, providing a virtually invisible restoration that enhances the aesthetics of your smile.
  • Long-Term Comfort and Protection: The insulating properties of composite fillings help protect the tooth from temperature fluctuations, adding to long-term comfort and durability.

Crowns & Bridges

Crowns & Bridges

If you’re looking to improve the aesthetics, health and function of your smile, porcelain veneers, crowns, or bridges may be the perfect option for you. Our doctor team can help you figure out which option is right for your dental situation.

Porcelain crowns

advantages of porcelain restorations

Porcelain crowns offer the ultimate solution for restoring and protecting damaged teeth. By covering the entire tooth, a porcelain crown can bring it back to its natural or ideal shape and shade. Crowns are also an excellent option for correcting crooked, worn, or damaged teeth, giving you a smile that not only looks perfect but feels great too.

Porcelain bridges are an effective way to replace missing teeth, restoring both the appearance and function of your smile. These restorations are particularly ideal if the surrounding teeth have large fillings, fractures, or damage, as the porcelain bridge not only fills the gap but also strengthens and protects the adjacent teeth.

Our crowns and bridges are crafted by skilled ceramists who specialize in high-quality, custom porcelain restorations. Porcelain crowns are incredibly strong, and when bonded in place, they reinforce the remaining tooth structure. Crowns can also be used preventatively, protecting teeth from future fractures or decay, ensuring long-term health and stability.

porcelain crowns and bridges can correct dental imperfections such as:

  • Stains and discoloration
  • Spaces between teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Badly decayed teeth
  • Crooked teeth or bite misalignment
  • Tooth size or wear
  • Fractured or broken teeth
  • Need to protect and strengthen teeth

what to expect at your crown appointment:

At a crown appointment, you can expect a comfortable and efficient process designed to restore both the function and beauty of your tooth. Here’s our typical process:

  • Initial Examination and Preparation: Our doctor will begin by thoroughly examining the tooth to ensure it’s healthy enough for a crown. If necessary, any decay or damage will be carefully removed, and the tooth will be shaped to accommodate the crown. This step ensures the crown will fit securely and look natural.
  • Digital Impressions: We use advanced digital technology to take precise impressions of your tooth. These digital scans allow us to design a custom porcelain crown that perfectly matches the shape and shade of your natural teeth.
  • Temporary Crown: While your custom crown is being crafted by our skilled ceramists, you’ll receive a temporary crown to protect the prepared tooth. This ensures you can eat and speak comfortably while you wait for your final restoration.
  • Final Crown Placement: Once your permanent crown is ready, you’ll return for the final appointment. Our doctor will remove the temporary crown and bond the custom porcelain crown securely in place. The crown will be adjusted for a perfect fit, ensuring it blends seamlessly with your surrounding teeth for a natural appearance.
  • Polishing and Final Check: After your crown is placed, it will be carefully polished, and our team will make sure your bite is comfortable. You’ll leave with a beautiful, durable restoration that protects and enhances your smile.

    Root Canals

    Root Canals

If you are suffering from dental pain and extreme sensitivity, a root canal is sometimes required to alleviate the pain and restore your tooth. While you never want to hear that you need a root canal, you can rest at ease knowing that highly-trained dental experts are taking care of you.

    root canals

Why Root Canals Are Sometimes Necessary

Root canals are often necessary when the inner part of a tooth, known as the pulp, becomes infected due to decay, injury, or damage. Left untreated, this infection can cause significant discomfort and pose serious risks to your dental and overall health if it becomes infected. Here’s why a root canal may be essential:

    • Infection Due to Decay or Injury: When a tooth is damaged by decay or injury, bacteria can reach the pulp, leading to infection. A root canal removes the infected tissue, preventing the infection from spreading and saving the tooth.
    • Pain from Pressure or Biting Down: If you’re experiencing pain when biting down, it could be a sign of infection or nerve damage inside the tooth. A root canal eliminates this pain by treating the source of the problem, allowing you to bite comfortably again.
    • Severe Sensitivity to Hot and Cold: Extreme sensitivity to temperature changes is a common symptom of an infected tooth. A root canal can stop the pain and restore normal function to your tooth.
    • Prevent the Spread of Infection: Without treatment, a tooth infection can spread to surrounding areas, causing more severe health issues. A root canal stops the infection in its tracks, preserving the health of your teeth and gums.

Root canals are a safe and effective way to eliminate pain, stop infection, and save your tooth. By addressing the problem early, you can protect your smile and prevent more extensive dental procedures in the future.

Here are some key advantages of choosing root canal treatment:

    • Saves Your Tooth: Root canals allow you to keep a tooth that might otherwise need to be extracted, helping to maintain your natural smile and preventing the need for tooth replacement options.
    • Relieves Pain and Discomfort: By removing the infected or damaged tissue inside your tooth, a root canal alleviates the pain caused by infection, pressure, or sensitivity, restoring your comfort.
    • Maintains Bite Stability: Keeping your natural tooth through root canal treatment helps maintain the alignment and stability of your bite. Removing a tooth without proper replacement can lead to shifting teeth, which can cause further dental issues.

    The process of root canals

Our doctors are highly trained in diagnosing and performing root canals. Due to case complexity or scheduling constraints, we may sometimes refer patients to root canal specialists, known as endodontists. Whether you are treated here or at an endodontist’s office, here’s what you can expect during your visit.

Inside each tooth is a pulp chamber that contains the tooth’s nerves and blood supply. When the pulp becomes infected or damaged due to decay, fracture, or injury, it must be removed. The canal is then cleaned, and a temporary filling is placed until a final restorative procedure, typically a crown, can be completed. This process is essential to save the remaining structure of the tooth.

After a root canal, all teeth must be protected with a porcelain crown. Teeth that have had the pulp removed are more prone to fractures, so a crown is necessary to safeguard the tooth. For more details about porcelain crowns, click here.

If you choose not to undergo root canal treatment, the only alternative is to remove the infected tooth. However, there are replacement options to prevent shifting and weakening around the missing tooth. These options include replacing the tooth with a bridge or an implant, ensuring your smile and dental health remain intact.
